Greenwich Village Transforms into Open-Air Gallery at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit

New York, NY – May 31–June 1, 2025 — This weekend, the heart of Greenwich Village becomes an epicenter of creativity as the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit returns for its spring edition. Stretching along University Place from East 13th Street to Waverly Place, the historic open-air art fair invites thousands of visitors to explore the work of over 300 artists from around the country.

Founded in 1931 by Jackson Pollock’s mentor, sculptor Augustus “Gus” Staton, the exhibit is a cherished New York tradition that brings fine art directly to the public. This year’s lineup includes a vibrant mix of media—from oil and watercolor paintings to photography, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media creations.

Artists, both emerging and established, line the sidewalks, engaging with passersby and offering their pieces for sale in an atmosphere that blurs the lines between gallery and street. Many visitors enjoy not just the art, but also the stories behind each piece as told by the creators themselves.

“I’ve exhibited here for five years now,” says Brooklyn-based painter Tasha Romero. “There’s no place like it—raw, real, and right in the heart of the city.”

In addition to the art, food vendors and live music performances add to the festive atmosphere, making it a must-visit cultural destination for locals and tourists alike.

The exhibit runs from 12 PM to 6 PM each day, rain or shine, and is free to the public.
